Having a robust IT infrastructure in place is not sufficient to ensure rapid and interactive knowledge sharing and management. The most useful KM enablers are those that combine the elements of human resource management and IT to configure active human knowledge networks. Though firms use many KM tools with varying degrees of success, few have managed to establish themselves as KM philosophies in their own right.

Knowledge Maps: Knowledge mapping is the process of scanning the organizational landscape to unearth not only knowledge sources and artifacts, but also the flow of information and any blocks to this flow. Knowledge mapping relies on a combination of techniques like interviews, observing work in progress, studying documents and even focus groups to track explicit as well as tacit knowledge.
